Create an IOS App in the Cloud, Office Hours/Mentoring on IBM Global Entrepreneur Program, IOT and Women Watson Cognitive Computing Bootcamps and the New Bluemix Alchemy Service all Free

Greetings! We have almost made it to summer. As the weather gets warmer and more people are attending meetups and watching drones fly, frequently one statement comes up, “I want to learn how to do that.” This is great news because this means, we are creating an environment where people want to know more about how technology works and they want to begin taking the steps to make the technology work for them.   In addition, at a meetup this week, two people said I want to understand this for myself to be better able to communicate with others in business discussions.

In the past, we had Teach the Teach Training events two or three times a year to help faculty get hands on experience with new technologies.   Now with Meetups we have regular opportunities for 2 hour hands-on training almost weekly and day long bootcamps as well as office hours to answer questions on cloud, startups and more.   Below is summary of key education scheduled for faculty, students, women, men, beginning programmers, advanced programmers and basically anyone wanting to continue learning and it is free.

Let’s begin….

AlchemyAPI uses natural language processing technology and machine learning algorithms to extract semantic meta-data from content, such as information on people, places, companies, topics, facts, relationships, authors, and languages.   API endpoints are provided for performing content analysis on Internet-accessible web pages, posted HTML or text content. The Watson Service has three Alchemy tools: Alchemy Language, Alchemy Vision and Alchemy Vision Face Detection/Recognition.   Here is what the Alchemy Vision Face Detection/Recognition service said about my twitter picture:

Facebook and IBM Partnership

https://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/46760.wss

Speaking of faces, the IBM and Facebook partnership is another key announcement made in May that has great potential to leverage the assets of both companies to make it easier for personalized marketing to indeed be specific to an individuals needs. “There’s already a sizable ecosystem of companies tapping into Facebook’s ad capabilities. Asked how this partnership is different, Jay Henderson, director for IBM Commerce, pointed out that Facebook is the first company to join IBM’s THINKLab, where team members from IBM and Facebook can work with advertisers to create campaigns with a focus on personalized customer experiences: “No other company is doing this with Facebook today.” “http://techcrunch.com/2015/05/05/ibm-partners-with-facebook/ (Techcrunch May 5, 2015)

With so many learning opportunities, I hope to see you at one if not several of the events. This update lists events mainly for the month of June. The best way to stay informed about learning events (most all are free) is to join our Chicago, Paas, Bluemix and Cloud Cognitive Computing Meetup: http://www.meetup.com/Chicago-PaaS-Bluemix-and-Cloud-Computing-Meetup/. I am the co-organizer of the meetup and look forward to your participation and input.

With over 100 Bluemix Services and the list continuing to grow hopefully the various education sessions make it easy to learn as much as you want to learn on an on-going basis. Below is an example of what many can do in addition to creating an app. Consider combining the Bluemix Alchemy Service(https://console.ng.bluemix.net/?ace_base=true/#/store/serviceOfferingGuid=16ba80cc-8bac-4565-96f6-5dbefc729f12&fromCatalog=true) with the Personality Insights (https://watson-pi-demo.mybluemix.net/) and have a great class exercise or prep for an investor or client meeting discussion using the Bluemix Watson Services to show the art of the impossible by using this new palette of Bluemix resources.

In case you are interested here is an excerpt of the Watson Service for Personality Insight of me based on this update, “You are heartfelt, tranquil and restrained. You are philosophical: you are open to and intrigued by new ideas and love to explore them. You are empathetic: you feel what others feel and are compassionate towards them. And you are authority-challenging: you prefer to challenge authority and traditional values to help bring about positive changes.”

I agree….now let’s go change the world!
